"The Beach"
Who is Kat Timpf? According to Wikipedia, "Katherine Clare Timpf is an American libertarian columnist, television personality, reporter, and comedian." She is also a panelist on the Gutfeld show, a nightly program, in which the guests use a considerable amount of profanity (even though it is censored). Christians would agree with many of her views but disagree strenuously with other positions. At the end of August (2024), she made some comments that were totally unexpected about going to the beach. What she said is somewhat perplexing because she is not known for modest dress, and she has posted some photos of herself wearing a bikini at the beach.
Therefore it is all the more strange that she stated, "I'm sick of people acting like the beach is fun for longer than twenty minutes. It's not fun." But she was not finished with her comments. She complained about it taking an hour to drive to the beach. "You get there. Then what? Everybody's [got] a big thing [about it]. The beach, ahhh, the beach. Here's your options. Sit around the dirt in your underwear. Or go into the water in your underwear. Like, I'm sorry. I know the beach is a big thing. Everyone's there just pretending it's fun."
Your congenial editor's first reaction was, "Did she really say that?" Therefore, I ran it back and copied down the words just to make sure I heard them correctly. An actual celebrity made those comments? Yes! Of course, we don't know if she will stand by them, but such a confession is truly unique in today's Age of Immodesty. The pornography industry makes billions of dollars a year, and other forms of nudity and near-nudity proliferate in movies. The Swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated continues to be a perennial favorite. Even "Christian" universities have their students drawing nude forms, and they still haven't figured out that such actions violate the teachings of Jesus (Matt. 5:27-28). But Kat is correct: the way many people talk about going to the beach approximates what a Muslim feels in making a pilgrimage to Mecca. It's just the ultimate.
It's particularly interesting that she chose the word underwear. Actually, less material is probably used in manufacturing bikinis than what is used in underwear. By no means does it meet the clothing standard that God gave to Adam and Eve, which covered from the shoulders to the knees (Gen. 3:21), which may explain the attraction for many people. It also explains why so many prefer the shore to the ocean. About fifty years ago, one of the members of the church in Pennsylvania had just returned from vacation. He did not seem that happy with it. He said, "I spent two weeks sitting in the hot sand, trying to convince myself I was having the time of my life." Even if it is fun for some, modesty remains a paramount concern.
