Proof There Is No God

Who would have thought that proof that there is no God would have come from a soccer player? But that's what Megan Rapinoe said after she injured herself six minutes into her last game before retirement. Ryan Gaydos posted the article concerning the matter on November 12, 2023. Following are the words the pink-haired woman actually said after injuring her Achilles tendon: "I'm not a religious person or anything and if there was a god, like, this is proof that there isn't." Seriously? Interestingly, she fell on her own; it was a non-contact injury.

Many have suggested that in fact she was not serious—that she was just making a joke. If so, it fell as flat as she did—and it has been injurious to herself with those who took the line seriously. Several have suggested that it might rather be a proof for God's existence—that she had such an inglorious conclusion to her career. How did this "humorous" line originate? Perhaps her teammates were commiserating with her about her bad fortune. Did someone suggest that if there were any justice in this world, she would have ended her career by scoring three goals? And then did someone else pipe up with, "Yeah, how could God let this happen?" From there, it is only a faltering step away to saying, "OK, then, God must not exist." The only thing is that many who have a terrific sense of humor—some even bizarre—are not laughing. The joke might have been that the God of the universe would be concerned at all about a soccer player, thus poking fun at her own pride. M-m-maybe.

Besides, the "joke" was poorly worded: "…if there was a god, like, this is proof that there isn't." The God Who created all of the languages at the Tower of Babel, like, probably understands the Valley Girl dialect of the American language. But what kind of logic is this? Essentially, she is saying, "If God exists, then this proves He doesn't exist." If He does exist (and He does), then nothing can prove He does not exist. Only if a person was an agnostic could he say, "I have had my doubts about the existence of God, but now I have proof that He definitely does not exist." But if God does exist, then no one can prove otherwise. The "humor" is both unfunny and illogical.

Besides, what if she became so angry at this conclusion that she went into earnest rehabilitation at the appropriate time and achieved an even better stamina than before? Rocky Bleier, for example, was wounded in Viet Nam. A piece of shrapnel hit his lower right leg and foot, severely damaging it; he received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart—and the news that he would never play football again. Art Rooney sent him a postcard, saying the Steelers needed him. After eight years of determined effort, mingled with pain, Bleier gained 1,000 yards in 1976 (as did Franco Harris). They also won four Super Bowls. If Rapinoe made the effort and helped her team to a championship, would that then prove to her God existed?
