"Correcting Scripture or Correcting Us?"
In a recent Wednesday night Bible class, I shared a video of a speech made by Yvette Flunder, pastor and bishop in the United Church of Christ, ultra feminist in a lesbian "marriage," and social activist. Though she claims a relationship with God, she called for a "third testament" to replace the two that we have, since the Bible condemns her lifestyle. She even advocated tearing out pages of the Bible that portray God as "vitriolic" (in other words, "hate Speech"). I wonder what she does with a passage like Proverbs 6:16-19).
The problem of Ms. Flunder and many like her through the years is that they do not want to be "under" God's authority as revealed in Scripture. They impose their judgment on Scripture as if they were "over" or "above" Scriptures. They do not want to be corrected by Scripture. Instead, they will "correct Scriptures" to make it pleasing to them.
Scripture is designed to correct us and cause us to repent and return to God. "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness" (2 Tim. 3:16). Notice these words—reproof and correction. To reprove means "to convict" or "to show." We need to be shown or convicted when we are wrong, though we may not like to be told we are wrong. To correct means "to set straight."
To use an analogy, if we were driving and left the road, the person who tells us we are in the ditch is telling us our true situation—and how dangerous it might be. The person who then tells us how to get out of the ditch and back on the right road is helping us. All of us need friends who love us enough to tell us the truth and help us make the corrections we need. God is our friend when He reproves and corrects us!
Sinful humanity is in no position to correct a Holy God. Let's stop trying to edit Scripture and let is start correcting us!
