A Letter to the President
[Editor’s note: Frank Vassell, one of our members at South Seminole, sent the following letter to the President of the United States on December 28, 2012. A few modifications were made for space limitations.]
Words have meaning and so it is to preserve order, communication, and comprehension…. Marriage…is such a word. At inception it devoted a unique relationship, barring all others between all other creatures, as there was none suitable. The first character, man, was established, and the second, woman, originated from the first for a peculiar relationship between them only (Gen. 2:18-24). The word was in Middle English around 1250-1300, and it referred to the formal contract between opposite sexes (Gramarcy Books 1996). The authors respected the original intent of that relationship and so designated it with the word marriage. The institution to which it refers was ordered by the Creator and reserved in essence to Him.
Civilizations have respected the designation and kept it so for over 750 years. It preserved understanding that when marriage was used to refer to the human race, it meant between male and female. What benefit and advantage of peace and freedom from confusion would be satisfied by pushing for the designation to refer to those of the human race of the same sex or even to refer to all other creatures joining one or the other in a conjugal relationship? Some seek external privileges of the bond of two of the highest earthly order and dare to seek the permission to use the marriage designation as well. Intrinsic acts such as child-bearing are preserved and intact as among all the creatures.
I urge you, Sir, to send the applicants to assemble a new word for their curious relationships and return for consideration, but leave the word marriage (duly assigned, and time tested) to the natural and God-given relationship of two—man and woman. May God bless your good judgment and in so acting may disseminate blessing on the Republic as well.
Frank received a response to his letter more than six months later. Dated July 13, 2013, the response bearing the President’s name reads:
Thank you for writing. We must stand united to protect liberty and justice for all our citizens, and I appreciate your perspective on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights.
The letter then goes on to list all that the Obama administration had done for those in the LGBT category, including the repeal of the military’s, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. The only line remotely responsive to Frank’s letter (and it was probably accidental) was this one: “I personally believe in marriage equality for same-sex couples.” Needless to say, no point made in the letter was commented on or even alluded to. One wonders if anyone even read it. The President did, however, make it clear where he stands.
Americans must face the fact that the person who now holds the highest office in America is pro-homosexual marriage, as well as pro-abortion. Anyone who extends such an influence for wickedness over the nation has surely not gone unnoticed by God. He also bends over backwards, refusing to call Muslim terrorists what they, in fact, are. Such jihadists just may be the means through which God brings down an immoral and ungodly United States. From the President and his supporters to the Supreme Court who ruled the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) unconstitutional in June of 2013, our country is morally corrupt. This nation has toppled so far into doing the will of Satan that electing a different party may no longer do any good. Will anyone—can anyone undo the damage that has already been done?
